As a people the Portuguese who live on the island come across as very accommodating and helpful. Even if they don’t speak English. We rented a car and I loved driving on around on the island. Coming from a very flat country it never became boring to drive on the highways through hills and mountains. Every corner afforded a breathtaking view. In the cities you will quickly become comfortable with narrow streets, but the locals drive carefully when navigating them. The only bad thing I can really say about the island is that it seems to be a completely Pepsi free zone.

Being an island you will come across many seafood restaurants, and if you visit the island São Miguel I highly recommend visiting the place called Marisera. It was one of the most memorable food experiences of my life.

If you don’t know, Ludum Dare is a game development competition where you create a game prototype over a weekend.

Ludum Dare 55 was rolling up and I’d set aside time in the calendar to participate. I was planning on participating solo, as I’m mostly used to that, or as a “hired gun” – someone who makes the music (or other things).

Just out of curiosity I asked in a community I’m a member of, Gentleland, if anybody else was participating. Emiliano offered to join forces and do a project together. I jumped at the chance because it’s not often I get the chance to work with someone else.

On the morning of the compo’s start we started brainstorming together on the theme. We ended up with a sort of dungeon management idea and decided that I would do graphics and music, and he would code it.

It was a huge challenge as I don’t really consider myself a graphics person. While working on the skeleton I was trying to animate it and was reminded how hard it is. I started to feel the pressure because it was taking so long, and if I had to animate a handful of other characters I wouldn’t have time for anything else. For that reason we decided to simply make the sprites static.

I was only able to write the music as midi music as it had to be compatible with as many versions of the game as possible. This means that all the modern tools I was used to were unavailable, so it was a very interesting challenge.

Tokyo – Sunshine Aquarium

Located inside a mall, it was hard to find (at least for tourists) but was well worth the visit. They had all sorts of animals and it was a great experience.

Kawagoe and Kitain Temple

Kawagoe is a historic area of/near Tokyo. If you want to see traditional buildings, this is the place to go.

Kitain Temple was extremely impressive. It’s around 1200 years old and it was easy to imagine it looked much, back then, as it does now. We couldn’t help but feel a sense of tranquility exploring its grounds. Visitors are asked not to photograph the inside of the temple so I only have pictures from the outside areas.

Nara park

This park is, by now, quite famous and we definitely wanted to visit. It was quite interesting to see animals, that are normally very shy, come up to us. Some of them were downright demanding. It was very entertaining to see tourists buy treats for them, yet panic and run away when they were approached by a hungry animal. The whole park is very beautiful.

Hakone & Lake Ashi

Another popular destination was an active volcano in Hakone. There was a distinct smell of sulfur in the air that you quickly got used to. You could see extremely far.

One of the local curiosities was their famous black eggs. We stood in line talking about what culinary experience awaited us. To our surprise they were just ordinary eggs. The reason they’re black is because they place them on top of sulfur vents which turns the shells black and boils them.

Afterwards we took a trip around the beautiful Lake Ashi.

Arashiyama Bamboo Forest

In Osaka we explored a large bamboo forest. It was quite interesting to experience a forest that was so dense, yet you could see so far. It gave off quite a different atmosphere compared to a typical European forest. The whole area was extremely pretty.

Osaka Castle

This castle is now a museum, so if you like history I would definitely recommend a visit. The architecture is, of course, very different from the castles I’ve seen here in Europe, and very pretty.

The Need For Lightspeed (November 2014) was monumental for me in the way that it was one of the first tracks where I felt like I wasn’t just fooling around and it actually sounded like music. I remember feeling very proud of myself.

Bit Slapped (December 2014) was the first track anyone I knew would keep talking about. A friend mentioned it very frequently which made me happy. At the time of making it I remember trying to grasp what chord progressions were and the track was my playground for that attempt. I wanted to write something that was friendly to the ears and somehow the track ended up reminding me of the 1950s and especially the movie Back To The Future. So I rolled with it and did a guitar solo type of thing in the chorus. To be honest I wasn’t sure back then why the track seemed to work better than others but listening to it now I feel like I could probably explain why.

The Sculptor – by the time 2016 rolled around I was wanting to try and write lyrics. I’d researched how you could go about it and one of the things I remember thinking about was how art needs to be personal and relatable to touch people. For that reason I wrote a song inspired by things I was going through at the time. The theme was how much you can accomplish by working on yourself. At the same time I continued working with composition. The result was that, while on a roadtrip around Eastern Europe, my friends kept asking me to put this song on and it basically became the whole trips theme song. It felt like a massive step in the right direction for me.

Synthwave track “The Method” pays homage to the scientific method with catchy synth leads and vocal chorus reciting its steps. It emphasizes the importance of the scientific process.

This was a track that had to go through several iterations. I had the main idea a few years ago and kept trying to write the track, but I kept hitting roadblocks. I liked it so much that it kept haunting me though, and with enough persistence I was able to finish it.

I also had a rough idea about making a video for it. I edited a rough version of it but quickly decided that it was too obvious that I don’t make music videos for a living so I was able to recruit help. Dana did a great job in my opinion.
